Benjamin and Hana were best friends, and Benjamin was always on the lookout for Hana and ready to protect her from any yappy Chihuahua who tried to intimidate her. Hana belonged to friends of Doreen, but Doreen and her boxer, Benjamin, fell in love with her. That was the case for Doreen Murotsune, whose life was touched by a beautiful NCBR alumna named Hana. As we all know, foster homes are the single most important part of NCBR and having these volunteers take over finding, processing and supporting foster homes will be instrumental to NCBR’s continued success.įor many of us who give our hearts, time, or dollars to rescue, we are first inspired by the love of a single special dog. I do need a crate for nightime, when you're gone, and when I need a time-out. I do need mental stimulation like puzzles and training commands. I do need you to learn my signals of when I'm getting anxious, scared, or overstimulated. I do need structure to my day to the best of your ability. I don't need to go through doorways or hallways first. I don't need to be out when you have company. I do very well with a routine, boundaries, and consistency. I need a home that will treat me like a dog. I showed them all my quirks so they could help determine the best type of home for me and also determine if I would ever be able to live with a family. I struggled the first day, but settled in. I did! I needed to get that 5%, so I met with an in-home trainer and ultimately, it was decided a board & train facility would be best for me. My foster family spent three months training me.

I'm a good boy, but didn't know how to get that other 5%. The shelter life really did a number on me. I guess you could say, I forgot what it was like to have people care about me. It feels amazing! I loved it, but again sometimes I get overstimulated, can't calm myself, and get snappy or bite.
I had forgotten what it was like to have humans touch me and love on me.
I just didn't know how to calm myself down and I took it out on her. Sometimes, when I was overstimultaed I would pick a fight. I had forgotten what it was like to be around other dogs. My foster family worked with me on new textures and eventually I could walk on anything. I had forgotten what it was like to walk on anything but concrete. I would steal any blanket I could find and fell in love with my dog bed and the couch. I had forgotten what it felt like to have something soft to sleep on. I had lost hope I'd be part of a family and then here I was.part of a family. For the first time since April of 2020, I was in a HOME! My foster family included a mom, a dad, and a fur sister. It was time for my second chance! I arrived January 29th, 2022. I passed with flying colors! Next thing I knew, I was on my way to Minnesota. They had the shelter evaluate me with people and dogs. Though I'm a boxer pit mix, they felt I deserved a second chance at life. Through networking with a shelter volunteer, I was hooked up with Minnesota Boxer Rescue. I spent a year and a half in a small shelter in Kansas. "For some of us, rescue is the difference between life and death."
